FOOD AND INCOME SECURITY FOR VULNERABLE  FARMERS IN UGANDA

The major aim of the project plan is to train approximately 70 farmers families (7groups 10 farmers) in more than 7 sub counties/Town councils, and in more than 10 parishes in the central region of Uganda in sustainable management of their land resources and to improve food security and income among 70   farmers households. Every group of farmers will be trained and will work together on both their individual gardens as well as on their joint projects e.g Tree nurseries and livestock breeding/rearing.

The planned period of the pilot will be two years (4 planting periods). After evaluating and reporting we will continue and finish the project in 4 years.

TRAINING

During the project, each farmer group will receive in total four (4) theoretical and 13 field training. At the end of the project the joint projects (tree nurseries and livestock breeding / rearing) as well as the joint tools will be brought into a revolving scheme managed and administered by the Farmers Association at sub- county level.

Target group/catchment

Farmer households living in the districts and sub -counties in the central region of Uganda where the average farm income is low, land pressure high and soil condition are bad. For this project we especially work with farmers that have had little or inadequate training and have poor or limited access to improve farm inputs.

In this pilot project we will start working in the sub-counties.

EXPECTED RESULTS OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN

  • In this project farmers are expected to learn how to plant different types of food at a given period of the year.
  • By learning and doing some trials and demonstration farmers are expected to be given new crops for the first planting season.
  • By planting the new crops these farmers farms are expected to be demonstration farms to some individual’s farmers and group farmers.
  • We expected people’s conservative minds of depending on one crop to change and grow other food crops like maize, soya beans water melon, passion fruits extra.
  • We expect farmers to get enough food and sell some to earn income
  • We expect farmers and there dependents to fight mal nutrition among children in the community.
  • We expect more set up of demonstration farms for different crop types.
  • By setting up demonstration farms we expect people to acquire enough knowledge to start up on their own farms using knowledge got from these demonstration farms.
  • We expect casual laborers on the big demonstration farms to look after their families after getting their wages and salaries.

Sustainability

Lead farmers, trained in this project will act as model farmers who will together train others. It is expected that after these training proper land management and food security will be implemented by the community Environmental Conservation Societies in and around the established technology transfer -or multiplication sites. By teaching other farmers in their neighborhood to replicate of the learned practices, lead farmers will be backstopped by the project staff in cooperation with the local Government personnel. This will be the basis for long term sustainability and proper management of the land and subsequently long-term food security for many people in the medium term (5-15years) as well as the next generation (20years onwards) in the Central Region of Uganda.
